History of Karnala Fort

The Karnala fort was constructed before the 1400s under Yadav and Tughlaq rulers. It was
known as the capital of the North Konkan district. In the year 1540, the fort was taken over
by Nizam Shah of Ahmed Nagar.

 

About Karnala Fort

This fort is situated within the premises of the Karnala Bird Sanctuary. It is about 10 Km
from Panvel and 65 Km from Mumbai. When you visit Panvel, you shouldn’t miss out on this
aesthetic-minded-refreshing place. Alternatively, you can trek for two hours to reach the fort.
If not, the trek will not take longer than three hours. In the monsoon, however, it gets tricky
and slippery but is still a perfect spot for adventurous souls. It is recommended that you must
wear sports shoes on your trek to the top. There are also some short-cut routes, but it is not
recommended that you try these, especially if you are travelling solo.

When you reach the top, you will be rewarded with breathtaking views of lush green forests
and mountains. It is a perfect click-worthy spot while you are up there. You will be able to
catch sight of Prabalgad and Rajmachi on the northern side if you have clear weather
conditions. Other than the views, the fort is also a serene & tranquil spot to just rejuvenate
yourself or relax with your friends. The trek down is also comparatively easier, but you do
have to watch out for slippery terrain.

 

Best Time to visit the Karnala Fort

The best time to visit the fort is from November to February, However, the monsoon season
is also a good time to visit. The whole sanctuary is covered in lush green vegetation, and the
cloudy skies make the weather very soothing.

 

Karnala fort Entry Fee

The entry price for the fort is 30 rupees for adults and 15 rupees for kids. The fort is open
from 7 a.m. to 6 p.m.
You can reach the fort by taking an auto, rickshaw, or cab via Panvel (Navi Mumbai). You
can also take buses heading towards Alibag, Pen, or Roha to reach here.
